Who works in our class?

In Year 4, our Class Teachers are Miss Tweddle and Mrs Ridley, we also work with Mrs Cook (SEND Teaching Assistant), Mrs Chambers (HLTA) and Mrs Usher (Teaching Assistant).

Miss V Tweddle – Year 4 Teacher (MFL Co-ordinator)
Mrs G Ridley – Year 4 Teacher (Science Co-ordinator, Computing Lead)
Mrs L Cook – SEN Teaching Assistant

Mrs L Chambers – HLTA – (Nurture)

Year 4 is a fun, creative and curious class of 32 children. We work together as a team, ensuring that we are inclusive and supportive of each unique individual. In our class, we encourage our aspirations and understand that all of our skills can be developed with the correct mindset, hard work and resilience. We value mistakes as we understand that they help us learn and decipher problems.

General Information

We have PE each Tuesday and Thursday in Summer Term 2. On these days, please ensure that any earrings are removed, children with long hair have it tied back, and that your child arrives in school wearing their PE kit. For further information about school uniforms, please visit our school uniform page. We encourage children to read each and every day, therefore, children are asked to bring their home reading books and signed reading records into school daily. As Summer is now upon us, we ask that each child brings in a cap or hat to protect them from extended periods of sunshine during play times and encourage parents/carers to apply sun-cream to their child/children before arriving at school. For further information about our outdoor play and learning please see our OPAL page.

Curriculum Overview

Developing our love of reading

Year 4 develop their love of reading through being immersed in stories, investigating facts and absorbing vocabulary from a range of high-quality books. We read a variety of books from our Reading Spine throughout the school year (including classic books, contemporary fiction and picture books). We also have access to a wide selection of books in our reading bookshelves, including poetry, biographies and graphic novels. Children in Year 4 are encouraged to support one another on their reading journeys and often make recommendations to their peers based on their interests.

Our Reading Spine books are:

  • Bill’s New Frock by Anne Fine
  • Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White
  • Why the Whales Came by Michael Morpurgo
  • The Firework Maker’s Daughter by Phillip Pullman
  • Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne
  • The Snow Walker’s Son by Catherine Fisher
  • Perry Angel’s Suitcase by Glenda Millard

Mathematics

We follow the White Rose Maths long-term plan, encouraging children to develop their learning using the concrete – pictorial – abstract approach (CPA approach). Children also practise their times tables in numerous ways such as using Times Tables Rockstars, singing and playing games. In addition to this, children also complete our Big Maths Beat That, Mathstastic and Maths Olympics each week.

Ukulele

In our class, we learn to play the Ukulele! So far, we have learned how to play a number of chords, are beginning to read tablature and are even beginning to play some songs together as one large ensemble.
